Fostex R8 playback issue - starts then stops. Replaced it, same issue. Tension arms still have adequate give during playback. Anyone have any ideas what the issue may be? Does the capstan spin when you lift the tension arm? And always remain spinning? Tim MusicTechnology. Find all posts by Tapetech. Oh yeah, all of that functions just fine and normal. There may be a motion sensor on one of the idler wheels that is not working. I will look a schematic. Good lead, how would I go about testing it?

I had thought this myself, but dismissed it because the counter and transport functions work perfectly. Here's a video I made of the problem, if anyone else has encountered this or could wager what the issue is.

I've been investigating suggestions but still no success Video did not work. One of the 2 reel motion sensors may be out. Look at the sensor output pulse with your scope or with the bar graph on your DMM. Schematic shows sensors. Top two are reel motion. Collector is sensor output. Attached Images Screen Shot at 9.

I guess I didn't expect that much of it since it is a lower-end deck and I was mainly using it as a learning experience, but it worked pretty well and I can't say I'm not extremely disappointed about this. It looks like the pinch roller is clenching way too hard against the capstan.
